What Is Solitaire?
Solitaire - known as patience in British English - is a family of single-player card games that dates back to the late 18th century. The best-known variant, Klondike, became a household name after shipping with early versions of Microsoft Windows, and it remains one of the most-played games in the world. Today the family includes everything from five-minute pairing games like TriPeaks and Pyramid to deep puzzles like FreeCell, Spider, Yukon and Scorpion.
Although the layouts differ, nearly every variant shares the same skeleton: cards are dealt into a tableau, you rearrange them according to a building rule, and you win by moving every card to its final home - four foundations in Klondike and FreeCell, complete King-to-Ace runs in Spider and Scorpion, or an empty board in Pyramid, TriPeaks and Golf.
How to Choose a Solitaire Game
If you are not sure where to start, choose by how much time and how much frustration you want.
- Five minutes: TriPeaks and Golf. Simple rules, fast hands, and most deals can be cleared.
- The classic experience: Klondike Draw 1. Seven columns, alternating colours, one card from the stock at a time.
- A puzzle you can actually solve: FreeCell. All 52 cards are visible and more than 99% of deals are solvable, so wins feel earned.
- A long, patient session: Spider Solitaire. Two decks, ten columns, and the one-suit version is winnable far more often than you would expect.
- The hardest games here: Klondike Draw 3, Yukon and Scorpion. Expect to lose most hands, and enjoy the ones you win.
Playing Well: Three Habits That Matter in Every Variant
Most lost hands come down to the same few decisions made early. Uncover face-down cards before anything else - information is the resource you are always short of. Hold low cards back instead of rushing an Ace or a Two to the foundation, because you may still need them as something for other cards to sit on. And keep an empty column available for as long as the rules allow, since it is the most useful space on the board in Klondike, FreeCell and Spider alike.
Every game here includes unlimited undo, so you can try a line of play, see what it opens up, and step back out of it. That is not cheating - it is how players get better.
